Bad Behavior
Originally from Seth Godin's Blog

Bad behavior and irrational decisions are almost always caused by fear. If you want to change the behavior, address the fear.
And yet we don't.
Instead, we impose an embargo or throw someone in prison. We put a letter in the permanent file or put the employee on a performance improvement plan. We walk away from a prospect or blame a lack of sales on our advertising.
"What are you afraid of?" is not just a great line for a movie trailer. It's a shortcut in understanding what motivates.

When you've had enough, can't tolerate your job any longer and are ready to quit, perhaps you could try one last thing.
Quilt instead.
You've got nothing to lose, right? I mean, you're going to quit anyway, so what's the worst that could happen to you?
So quilt. Spend hours every day integrating the people you work with into a cohesive group. Weave in your customers as well. Take every scrap, even the people you don't like, and sew them together. Spend far less time than you should on the 'real' work and instead focus on creating genuine connections with the people you work with. Including your boss. After all, once you quit, you're never going to see them again anyway, right? Might as well give it a try.
Careful… it might change everything.

What makes a gentleman a gentleman? Many people pose this very question to Martez Burks, author of Memoirs of a Gentleman.

Martez is a self-proclaimed gentleman making moves in the melting-pot of the entertainment industry as a co-founder of Award Winning club promotional company, FlyMajor.com. His life consists of ongoing meetings with who’s who of the urban elite Nashville society and countless interactions women, which he used as the basis of his memoir.

Martez Burks attributes majority of his knowledge and understanding of what a gentleman represents to his own personal experiences.

Martez has lived the life of a hustler, entrepreneur, go-getter, distinguished Nashville, TN man, trend setter, live wire, achiever, self-starter, and high flier.

His life as a gentleman consists of ongoing meetings with who’s who of urban elite Nashville society and interactions with a lot of women. “Giving into temptation is a typical occurrence in my line of work”, thus the motivation for his newly published book Memoirs of a Gentleman.

Martez is currently a Graduate student at Tennessee State University, pursuing his Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology. Upon graduation, Martez hopes to earn his Doctorate Degree and make the New York Times Best Sellers list.

Memoirs of a Gentleman Prologue

What makes a gentleman a gentleman? It’s funny how that question can be asked in such an effortless manner, yet the answer is not simply derived.

As a self proclaimed gentleman, I attribute majority of my knowledge and understanding of what a gentleman represents to my own personal experiences.

It began while I was a young child, growing up in Milwaukee, WI. I was raised by my mother, whom instilled ‘gentleman like’ behaviors in my brother and me. We were the only men in the house, and we found pride in carrying grocery bags, and racing to open the door for our mother and aunts. I guess one could gather I was a gentleman in the making.

As an adolescent I carried myself as a little grown man. Intellectual conversations and mature masculine behavior intrigued my young mind. When I grew older the behavior I once emulated, I now embodied.

Many of the stories in the following scenarios are true. I’ve lived the life of a hustler, entrepreneur, go-getter, distinguished Nashville, TN man, trend setter, live wire, achiever, self-starter, and high flier while making moves in the melting-pot of the entertainment industry as an event promoter..

My life as a gentleman consists of ongoing meetings with who’s who of urban elite Nashville society and interactions with a lot of women. Giving into temptation is a typical occurrence in my line of work.

Many often confuse the term gentleman with being a perfect man, which is a false misconception. A gentleman is many things, but perfect he is not. He has the capacities to make mistakes and admit to them, and he learns many important life lessons from women.

As you will read within the following scenarios each one represents a gentleman at a different stage in maturity.

Memoirs of a Gentleman began as a conversational piece, but as time progressed, it matured into mini scenarios. Each situation involves a personal occurrence that ties to my experiences in life, either directly or indirectly. This Memoir is a tool to assist in providing some form of navigation to understanding the opposite sex.

I do not consider myself a “Love Doctor”, but I do believe that the scenarios in Memoirs of a Gentleman, if taken in the proper context, can provide an advantageous perspective on a variety of experiences and encounters whose exploration and discussion proves to be beneficial to many.

LaunchTip: Some of the most successful companies have experienced MAJOR failures before achieving the ultimate success. You might call them turnarounds, lucky bets, or rare exceptions, but for every successful business I have followed, there have been major setbacks, sometimes often right before the big success hits (the eye before the storm). Whenever I feel discouraged on any level, I simply read through our Featured Lady stories and reinvigorate my confidence with the learnings of their challenges, obstacles and tough times. What I have found is that sometimes the best result is the one that does not work. It liberates you to move forward in a different direction and narrows the possible roads to take. If you hang in there long enough, eventually, the odds are in your favor and the path to success will be the one you are standing on.

53 Ways to Become a Better Entrepreneur

Do you want to become a better entrepreneur? Well who doesn’t, right?

Over the past 8 years I have started around 9 companies. Sadly most of them failed, but the good news is, I have learned a lot over the years. Some of these things maybe obvious to you, while others may not, but none-the-less there will be something that will be beneficial to you.

Here are 53 things to keep in mind if you want to be a better entrepreneur:

Don’t let emotions cloud your decisions.

Accept criticism, no matter who gives it to you.

Never stop networking.

Learn from your own mistakes.

Separating Social Media Fact from Fiction

Social media’s proliferation has helped to advance public relations and marketing practice. Yet, despite the long distance we’ve traveled in just a short time with social media, we still have much to learn about both its potential and its limitations. So whether you’re an experienced social media user or are just now developing this aspect of your communication program, all can stand to benefit from recognizing some common myths surrounding social media.

Dispelling Five Common Social Media Myths

Myth: Social media will soon replace traditional media as the most viable source of news.
Fact: The percentage of original content found on social media pales in comparison to traditional media. In fact, most news content is first published in the print or web editions of major news outlets, and then syndicated or picked up on social media networks and blogs. Thus, while the preferred vehicle for news distribution may be shifting to digital, real-time platforms, the source of most content remains the same. Without traditional media, in whatever form, there would be very little, if any, news to fuel social media.

Myth: Social media is a cost-effective and easy way to connect and engage with stakeholders and brand constituents.
Fact: Engaging your audience via social media is certainly cost-effective in the sense that most of the sites available for participation are free to join. However, they still cost you in terms of the time needed to establish and maintain a profile or account. In fact, in the U.S., the average median salary for a “social media manager” hovers around $73,000, whereas the median salary of a “community relations manager” is over $82,000. That assumes you want to hire a dedicated person to handle your company’s social media. If you’re going to use someone already on your team, you’ll also need to factor in the additional expense associated with the time the person spends on other tasks, the newly added responsibility of maintaining your company’s social media presence, as well as the training they may need to undergo (think html and graphics for more advanced campaigns or the learning curve associated with novice users). Regardless of whether you choose to expand your team or stay in-house, you’ll also want to consider how much you’ll spend on social media advertising and how that fits into your overall communication budget.

Myth: If you want to take part in social media you’ll need to hire a special “social media agency” or some other form of social media “guru.”
Fact: A quick search on Twellow.com (The Twitter Yellow Pages) reveals that out of the 15.8 million profiles indexed, the phrase “social media” appears in some 31,000 bios, “new media” appears in 5,800. Whether known as a … guru (517); expert (405); manager (246); agency (151); pro, maverick or maven (86); or by some other name – we’re all merely students at various stages of development.

Myth: Because content is posted online or in social media, it is exempt from copyright or anti-piracy laws.
Fact: It has never been easier to distribute and disseminate content across the web. And the expansion of social media has accelerated the process. Unfortunately, many communications practitioners labor under the misperception that anything residing on the web “must be free” or “covered by the doctrine of fair-use.” In actuality, though, much of what populates online and social media remains subject to copyright or anti-piracy laws. “Alleged Peer-To-Peer Pirate Rejects Settlement Offer In File-Sharing Case” and “The YouTube Approach to Copyright Infringement Claims ” are just two of the many recent headlines atop stories that shed light on copyright as it applies to the web .

Myth: Social media is an effective communication strategy.
Fact: Yes, if your audience is attuned to social media, it can be a viable tool of engagement. But your communication program should not paint itself into a social media corner. It is important to remember that social media is just one tactic in a much broader communication effort; it is a medium, not the overall message. To demonstrate and measure success, it’s essential to create communications objectives that are aligned with your organization’s broad goals.

A handful of lessons a communicator learned

To be fully transparent, since that’s still a favorite buzzword thanks to our friends at the Federal Trade Commission, this list could be much longer. However, “The 77 Things Dave Didn’t Know” doesn’t have a great ring to it. So, here are a few things that could have helped me as I transitioned into the day-to-day world of communications and public relations.

1. Asking questions is a good thing

I came into the working world with a misconception that asking questions was somehow admitting defeat. After all, I’d just graduated and felt like I’d accomplished a great deal in my time at school. I had a hard time admitting that I didn’t know something. What would everyone think? Over the years, I’ve seen a strong pattern that those who ask questions—and listen closely to the answers—are often the smartest ones in the room.

2. Business background buys credibility

I’d taken economics and finance classes throughout college but hadn’t thought of spending time studying how business leaders had achieved their goals. Organizational management wasn’t a common crossover for communications students, but I wish I had thought of it. Understanding operations and management styles is crucial for communicators.

3. Confidence—trust yourself

(Caution on this one—it can easily go the wrong way if confidence moves to ego.) As long as you’re putting in the work, be comfortable speaking up about your areas of responsibility. It helps others understand that you’re capable of providing immediate value to the organization.

4. Watch the office politics closely

I had no idea how important this was when coming out of school. It takes just one big miss to get off on the wrong foot with someone you’ll need as an ally down the road. I don’t like power plays—and those who use internal status to move their own agendas. Watch closely, and see where both friction and allegiances lie. Think of it as high-stakes “Survivor.” You don’t want to become quickly tied to the person in the office who’s sinking or on their way out. Take the time to watch, and learn from the dynamics you see.

5. School isn’t over

Something changes every day in the communications industry. Keep notes on whom you met today and could help down the road, or tag your calendar with an idea for tomorrow before you go home for the day. Simple steps like this will keep you learning and ahead of the pack.

This is in no way a comprehensive list. I could add more on my own, but what have others learning in the first years of a communications career? What other tips do you have for the future of our industry?
